Since the beginning of their existence in 1998, Coldplay would not only capture the world with their heart pulling lyrics and hypnotizing melodies but they would take 10 percent of the bands profits and give them to charity. The generous amount that has been given from their fame still continues today and is not the only avenue Coldplay has taken. Lead singer Chris Martin knows it is the people who are truly the voice when it comes to any cause and believes awareness is the key. Walking into a venue to see one of their concerts is not only about hearing music but finding oneself educated and aware of the world’s hunger.
Partnering with Oxfam, Coldplay has dedicated their 2012 tour to helping spread awareness of the GROW Campaign. Making sure the world has enough food Oxfam has a motto of “Love food, hate injustice.” With over 20,000 supporters, Oxfam celebrates their movement by releasing exclusive Coldplay videos that have been recorded live on tour. The band also supports Amnesty International and played at The Secret Policeman’s Ball fundraiser in 2012. Lead singer Chris Martin and other members of Coldplay find it unacceptable that people who are working farming fields to provide food for our local markets are going without a warm plate for their own families.
The world’s hunger is not the only cause Coldplay calls out to. In 2009, they created a way to stay carbon neutral during one of their concerts at the Emirates Palace hotel in New Zealand. Organizers funded a wind farm to supply much of the energy needed for putting on such a show. Because it was not possible for such a spectacular event of that size to happen without the use of electrical power, the band purchased wind farm credits to replace what was used. This technique is in a way like recycling the energy that is being used that can be contributors to climate change. In the same way that plastic is recycled to help reduce pollution Coldplay and others plant trees to take in the carbon that has been used and replace it naturally. This is far from what some might consider to be a “tree hugging” community effort.
Feeding the hungry and taking responsibility for the air we breathe are clearly where Coldplay’s voice is being heard. But through the years of their world wind success they have also shown that children matter to them. Helping such organizations such as Children with AIDS, Keep A Child Alive, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Make A Child Smile Appeal continue to keep them angels in the area of giving back.
